RIP Zach Sobiech - May 20, 2013

At the age of 14, Zach found out that he had a rare form of terminal cancer. He knew he was going to die and for the time that he did have, he wanted to make music - touching millions of lives and leaving behind a beautiful story.

Zach’s family has requested that anyone interested in helping the cause, to effect change in children like Zach, to donate to the research fund set up on his behalf.

Manhattan Banana Stand Shows A-Peel of ‘Arrested Development’

Before 11 a.m., a line stretched across Sixth Avenue and down 49th Street. Students put off work to show up, employees stepped out of the office, and whispers abounded about potential celebrity appearances.

The banana stand from the cult favorite “Arrested Development” opened for business in Midtown Monday, dishing out complimentary frozen bananas to fans and passersby — and, perhaps, hiding money deep within its yellow walls.

My boyfriend has been telling me for weeks that I should start watching Arrested Development in preparation for the new season premier. He thinks I’ve never seen it but the fact is, I have…it just never caught on with me.

Perhaps four years of college would have changed my interest in this show but ever since the first few viewings with my freshmen floor, I never really had that much of an interest to pick it up.

Well luckily for the show, I am the minority on this one.

On May 26th, Netflix is reviving this show about the “exploits of an endearingly dysfunctional, formally well-off family”. The show originally aired on Fox, running for three years before canceling.

The banana stand, a fictitious family business on the Newport Beach boardwalk, became a running gag on the show, with the family patriarch frequently assuring his children that “there’s always money in the banana stand.” (The statement wasn’t just a reference to the killing made on frozen treats every summer — there were literally thousands of dollars stashed in the cheeky yellow structure, which were lost in a fire.)

I will be visiting the bf this weekend so something tells me that I will be spending my Sunday evening on the couch watching TV. I have absolutely no negative feelings towards this show but I will indeed but watching the premier with a cocktail in hand - perhaps something banana flavored to honor the event?

Obviously as I have chosen Tumblr as my blog platform, I really enjoy this site. You can find a bit of everything on here as Tumblrs use this site for a spectrum of purposes - some without a purpose at all. I have even seen emerging companies use Tumblr as their brand website (in my search of St. Louis ad agencies, I came across the Anti Agency’s tumblr site). However, I’ve come to realize that even though Tumblr has a rather large and growing user base, it still hasn’t reached the popularity…or perhaps the better word is ‘established’ name, that other social media sites have.

Take for instance AdAge. I found this article regarding the possible deal between Yahoo and Tumblr, a deal which I am not sure is the best for this 6-year old blogging site. While both Tumblr and Yahoo can benefit from this partnership, Tumblr would have to approach this ad revenue plan with much caution. One reader commented :

After reading this article, I looked for a ‘share’ button, wanting to post this article on Tumblr. I found out that I could choose to share this on Facebook, Twitter, and even some other sites I am not familiar with (Viadeo?) but no Tumblr.

I guess most people don’t see Tumblr as a place to share information…just pictures and gifs?

Bacardi Brings Back “Cubre Libre”, the Original Rum and Coke

I am a Rum and Coke gal and while Captain Morgan is my ‘comfort’ rum of choice (probably due to the fact that my bf and his pledge father had it around all the time during college), I have gotten to really enjoy Barcardi’s Oakheart Spiced Rum. Well, it is good to say that Barcardi has a new commercial campaign in the works.

Earlier this year, Bacardi USA turned to Jeff Weiss and Paul Opperman of boutique agency OW to oversee brand and creative strategy, along with Daley Strategic Advisers. Their assignment was to help re-position Bacardi’s flagship rum brand in the US.

Bacardi USA’s answer to Captain Morgan is Colonel Roosevelt.

The marketer’s flagship rum brand on Monday plans to introduce a TV commercial evoking the history of the “Cuba Libre,” better known as the rum and Coke cocktail, which Bacardi says was created in Cuba in 1900 as then-Col. Theodore Roosevelt and his Rough Riders helped fight for the nation’s independence from Spain.

The commercial spot above is one of a series of planned spots that will “emphasize the historical events that shaped the 151 year-old brand”. This seems to be a trend not only among rum brands but the beer and liquor industries at large. Diageo has done so with their “real-life privateer Captain Henry Morgan of the 1600s”. Budweiser has for awhile been known for their historical commercials (particularly during the Super Bowl).

Millennial consumers are “really looking for brands that have authenticity and a heritage and a story,” said Toby Whitmoyer, Bacardi USA’s VP of marketing for the rum brand. “Bacardi has been incredibly successful as a business, but we really haven’t taken the time to tell consumers the real story behind the brand.”

Fun tidbits about this commercial

- It is set to launch on Monday, same day as Cuban Independence Day

- There will be a NYC concert to celebrate, hosted by Rolling Stones and Bacardi…featuring Macklemore & Ryan Lewis AND Fitz and the Tantrums (also, may I boost that both artist groups have performed at WashU recently?!)

- Because of political restrictions on access to Cuba, the spot was filmed in Uruguay

Other fun historical facts that Bacardi will be unveiling in this campaign?

- An American engineer working in Cuba invented the Bacardi Daiquiri in 1898

- One of the first recorded recipes for the Mojito included Bacardi Rum

- This isn’t stated as a fact that will be in the new Bacardi commercials but according to Bacardi’s website, during prohibition in the US, Bacardi launched a campaign promoting Cuba as a major tourist site, telling US people to “Fly to Cuba and Bathe in Bacardi Rum”. Now wouldn’t that be a fun commercial?

DIY Paper Flowers

Made these for Valentine’s Day this year and decided to make another post because these really are an adorable craft project.

You can use origami paper or print your own! I made my own paper using fun patterns and prints (even made a few using Lilly Pulitzer Prints!)

Instructions can be found here.

I used pipe cleaners as a “stem” though I would recommend something a bit sturdier. Found Valentine themed pails to place the flowers in and added a “Happy Valentine’s” label in it (with some cute Audrey Hepburn quotes to add to that fun flirty feel)

I have been getting notifications on Facebook all week about my friends graduating. This is my way of saying congratulations. I have read this script many times and each time is another reminder about my education and where I want my life to be. I hope it has an effect on you as well as you go off into the “real world”.

“The really important kind of freedom involves attention, and awareness, and discipline, and eﬀort, and being able truly to care about other people and to sacriﬁce for them, over and over, in myriad petty little unsexy ways, every day. That is real freedom. The alternative is unconsciousness, the default-setting, the “rat race” — the constant gnawing sense of having had and lost some inﬁnite thing.”

“None of this is about morality, or religion, or dogma, or big fancy questions of life after death. The capital-T Truth is about life before death. It is about making it to 30, or maybe 50, without wanting to shoot yourself in the head. It is about simple awareness — awareness of what is so real and essential, so hidden in plain sight all around us, that we have to keep reminding ourselves, over and over: “This is water, this is water.”
